Database Driven

A database driven website is one that has at its heart a database containing all of the websites content, this can make maintaining a large website with many pages alot quicker and easier.

For example, imagine you run a rare books website and you have a catalogue of 10,000 books. Traditionally to display this many books on a website each one would need its own webpage. The trouble with this solution is what happens when you want to make a change to the design of each page? You would need to alter each page, one at a time, potentially 10,000 pages.

If we take the example above and build it based on a database driven website then we would have a database which basically contains a long list of each book and its details. We would also have a template file, this is what dictates exactly how your website would look. We then have some code which glues together the data from the database with the template file to produce the product webpage. This means, to change the look of the website you would only need to change one file, the template file and it would automatically change the way each product page looks.

By storing the data of each book in a database it also means you can setup a search page for people to find a particular book. It also gives you the ability to let users display the books in the order they choose, for example you would be able to sort the books by price, author or title making the site alot more user friendly and accessible.
